Studying Fisheries Science

Fisheries science focuses on the inhabitants of different bodies of water, such as fish, mussels, and algae. You’ll learn how to fish responsibly and sustainably in this field of study and understand what to look out for in the controlled breeding of aquatic organisms.

A degree program in fisheries science combines the basics of biology, chemistry, mathematics, and statistics. The focus is always on bodies of water such as oceans, lakes, and rivers and their inhabitants. For example, you’ll acquire knowledge in fish biology, aquaculture, fisheries management, and marine ecology.

Aspects of environmental protection, sustainability, and efficiency are particularly important in this field of study. In most cases, theoretical knowledge and practical skills are combined: you’ll carry out experiments in the laboratory during your studies and try out fish farming techniques and methods.

As fisheries science is a broad field, you can often specialize in different areas, such as certain types of water or aquatic organisms: are you more interested in oceans or lakes? Would you prefer to study algae or mussels? Typical courses in this field of study are also called aquaculture and ecosystem and fisheries sciences.
