Studying Agriculture

Agriculture as a field of study covers various aspects of plant cultivation and animal husbandry to produce renewable raw materials and food: from cultivating soil and the breeding of livestock to the processing and marketing of agricultural products.

In this field of study, you’ll learn how to manage farms and improve agricultural processes and conditions. A degree program in agriculture covers basic scientific principles as well as knowledge from the fields of plant science, livestock science, agricultural engineering, and agricultural economics. Ecological and social aspects of agriculture are usually included, such as sustainability and environmental protection.

You’ll learn more about soil science, arable farming, animal husbandry, feed science, and resource management. But you’ll also be prepared for the economic aspects of agriculture, for example through topics from business administration or marketing. You’ll typically be able to apply the knowledge you’ve acquired early on in practical exercises and field trials.

In the field of agriculture, there are several applications for specialization or you might receive generalist training, i.e., for the whole of agriculture as a field of study. Typical degree programs in this field of study include agricultural sciences, agricultural technology, agricultural and environmental education and simply agriculture.
