Studying Chemistry

Chemistry is a field of study in which everything revolves around chemical compounds, processes, and reactions. You’ll learn more about substances at an atomic and molecular level: from their properties and compositions to their structures and interactions.

In addition to a knowledge of chemistry, chemistry as a field of study also includes a foundational understanding of mathematics, physics and statistics. Among other things, you’ll learn more about compounds and reactions that contain carbon, the elements of the periodic table and the physical principles of chemical phenomena. You’ll need these theoretical foundations to conduct experiments.

When studying chemistry, you’ll typically be in the laboratory at an early stage. This also gives you an insight into the many different areas in which chemistry is used: chemical knowledge is needed for the development and refinement of microchips, medicines, recycling methods and fuels, among others.

Chemistry as a field of study has a number of sub-areas that you’ll deal with in greater detail: these might include organic, inorganic, physical, analytical and technical chemistry. That’s why typical degree programs are often called applied chemistry, industrial chemistry, materials chemistry or industrial chemistry in addition to general chemistry.

Career prospects | Chemistry

As a chemist, you’ll spend a lot of time in the laboratory analyzing substances, their reaction processes and types of compounds. You can develop new materials or technologies or test existing products or processes.

With a degree in chemistry, many doors will be open to you: for example, you can work in research and development, industry, quality assurance, business management, the environmental sector or education. Possible career specializations include food chemistry, cosmetic chemistry, paint and varnish chemistry, industrial chemistry, basic chemistry, or forensic chemistry.
