Studying Textile Technology

Textile technology focuses on textile materials and their development, production, and processing. In this field of study, you’ll learn everything about industrially produced textile fibers and products: from socks and clothes to curtains and doormats.

A textile technology degree program explores the following questions, among others: how can natural fibers such as cotton or synthetic fibers such as nylon be processed? How can car seat covers be made even more durable? What approaches can be used to achieve more environmentally friendly materials and a more sustainable textile production?

Textile technology provides engineering knowledge, supplemented by scientific and business management content. You’ll examine the properties of textiles and apply different processing techniques in this field of study. You’ll gain the skills needed to improve or maintain machines for textile production and to develop new working and production methods.

Textile technology studies often offer two options for specialization: you can specialize in either clothing or textiles of all kinds (e.g., bedding, seat covers, or carpets). Typical degree programs in this field of study are called clothing technology, textile and clothing technology, and textile technology.
