Studying Music

Music as a field of study focuses on theoretical and practical knowledge for musical practice: would you like to play an instrument or sing professionally? Are you interested in composing pieces of music? Would you like to teach music? Then music might be just right for you.

A degree program in music involves music in all its aspects: from music theory with subjects such as rhythm, notation, and tonality, to music history and music technology with recording and production methods as well as sound design. But other subjects are also included in this field of study, for example in areas such as music technology and music education.

You will usually receive in-depth instrumental or vocal training during your study of music depending on your talents and interests. You’ll therefore attend practical exercises and seminars at a very early stage and spend a lot of time in rehearsal rooms.

Many colleges and universities offer degree programs specifically for certain instruments, such as piano, guitar, trombone, cello, or trumpet. Other typical programs in the field of study of music include music management, music education, early music, jazz, singing, choir and ensemble conducting, as well as conducting and composition.
