In archaeology, you’ll explore the history of mankind: the focus of this field of study is on the historical relics of past cultures and societies. If you’re interested in history and enjoy researching and traveling, archaeology might be a great fit for you.

Archaeology will teach you about cultures, eras, and periods in history so you can analyze both written and material relics. Among other things, you’ll learn how to determine the age and origin of finds and what criteria you’ll need to use to classify them.

Excavations are an important part of this field of study: you’ll learn excavation techniques and methods for documenting and evaluating finds. You’ll also be trained to use technical equipment, particularly in the field of computer-aided analysis.

You can often specialize in a specific period or region, for example Egyptian archaeology, medieval archaeology and prehistory and early history. Other typical degree programs in this field of study include archaeological sciences, classical archaeology and prehistoric archaeology / geoarchaeology.

Career prospects | Archaeology

As an archaeologist, you’ll carry out excavations and apply investigation methods and surveying techniques. You’ll analyze, classify, and document the objects you find and attempt to reconstruct the way of life of the people in an area.

After your studies, you’ll mainly find work at research institutes and universities. Other job opportunities can be found in museums, exhibitions or the preservation of historical monuments. You can also work in tourism, cultural management, land surveying and in the media.
